I am not familiar with Canadian road system, but I guess that means that there is a one major highway and in order to get anywhere you have to drive on that for a long distance and then turn to another (smaller) road to get to your destination --- unlike when driving here in Europe you turn and change roads every few kilometers (at least the GPS tells you to do it)
