I've had many encounters with folks who have almost-but-not-quite-comprehensive grasp of English. I'm talking and they always plaster on this ingratiating smile and sometimes nod. But I've come to recognize this flicker in the eyebrows and eyes that betray their panicky incomprehension. I know I'd be exactly same way trying to live in their homeland.
