Didn't you know you really don't need to scroll? You can just start typing the name of the country, and it automatically jumps to that entry. I don't know how that would work on the phone (Chrome), though, but it works in Firefox.
Now that I'm from New Zealand, I find it annoying that when you type "N" as another reader above suggests, you then have to type in "ew_z" as well, since the first one that comes up is "New Caledonia". And I often see that the US is sitting way at the top of these lists, so they don't have to scroll at all!
Try being from Austria. Nice country with an "A", yes? No. Sometimes we're at the end of the list with the "A" countries, but we can also be categorized under "Ö" and that can be either grouped with "O" or be at the very, very end of the alphabet....

DeleteNow imagine being Korean. There is no consistency in drop-down menus. I have seen the following:

Democratic People's Republic of Korea (on the list with all the other "D" countries)
Republic of Korea (on the list with all the other "R" countries)
Korea, North
Korea, South (both under "K")

Deleteits even better when some list uses translated, and some english name of country ...depending which you can be either start of list or end of list
