Feels like this in Germany too. They'd insist on speaking English, even if my German was better than their English. The best compliment I got was from someone who was known for being hyper-critical. She looked at me in shock when she heard my German, and later told me that I was so good, I didn't sound like an American. XD (but heavily implied that I was still clearly not a German).
