Main reason Japan doesn't see itself as non-Asian or Madagascar as non-African is because Asia and Africa aren't simultaneously continents and political entities, just continents. If China, Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan all formed some kind of political trade pact without Japan, I'd imagine Japanese people would prefer not to be called Asian.
I'll have to object there, Anonymous. I've heard this "not part of Europe" stuff from a couple of friends of Brit origin, from WAY before the ECU was formed up officially. The Channel ain't much, but it stopped Napoleon and stopped Hitler and generally set up a "us and them over there" attitude for many on the island.
