I am sorry but I have to tell another anecdote. When in grad school in Midwest I attended a summer school with a very international set of participants from North America to Europe to New Zealand. One of us was a guy from Puglia region, and he had a very strong accent. He introduced himself as Alessio from 'EAT ali'. Our group felt very ashamed when one of the professors who served as our mentors made fun of his accent and categorically refused to understand him. (That professor had a bad reputation for other reasons, and I don't understand why he was ever hired)
