These are horrible photos, no question. (I am glad you mentioned selfie sardine photos, because they are no better at all) Beyond people with no photographic eye whatsoever, I wonder if the models need to take some of the blame. Even in today's selfie-obsessed world, there are a huge number of people who absolutely hate having their photo taken. Either a general hatred or a specific "My hair must be horrible" moment. A forced military-yearbook pose may be the only way to get everyone in the shot. Reduce everyone to the lowest common denominator.
