Oblivious Linguist

When language has no meaning anymore, you know you are fluent.

  1. I once was waiting for a student in my ESL course to hand in an exercise. The rest of the class had just left, and I did not want her to feel awkward about keeping me in class a little longer, so I just started to skim some tests from another course while she wrote her final lines.
    The girl handed in her papers, and I gave her feedback, only for her to look at me in utter confusion. I repeated the feedback, and halfway through it suddenly dawned on me that, because I had just been looking at Dutch tests, I was speaking Dutch to an Italian student who was taking English lessons... *facepalm*
