Well, I can tell you this much, just based on the stereotypes that I heard living near Quebec--that's a big change in the French attitude towards them! Not sure how long it'll take the Quebecois to stop seeing Parisians as snooty and patronizing...
I have no idea what you're referring to by the Québecois being shunned in France. The French have always been kind of over-enthusiastic about Québec and Québecois people (which isn't exactly reciprocal)
When is Then, when is Now? I'm French, almost 40 and I've never heard French hating the accent from Québec. Sometimes making fun of it, sure, but definitely not out of hate.
Same here. Now, I'm not going to pretend it's necessarily fun to have the few occasional idiots comment on how you have *such* a cute accent or pathetically attempt to imitate you, but I can't imagine for a second a Québecois being berated in France for the way he sounds. Think "British person visiting the US".
Yes! 20 years ago I did a student exchange to France, and my exchange partner truly looked down on Canadian French accents. 2 years ago I was in France, and my accent in French reads as Québecois to someone who's French and got the second reaction.
Probably because no one outside of Quebec would know what the Quebec flag looks like, while a French flag with a maple leaf on it conveys the idea of Canadian French very clearly....
Québecois tended to avoid English loan words that were common in France to the point where they've begun adopting Québecois terms to restore the French-ness of the language.
Er...
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the irony.
Can someone explain to me?
Québécois used to be shunned in France and people used to tell them their accent sucks. Now we're in love with them.

ReplyDeleteAnyone know what changed?
Why not use the Quebec flag? It seems more appropriate than the France-Maple leaf amalgam flag.

DeleteWhy is the accent in fashion these days?
ReplyDeleteI'd rather see this flag than a separatist flag :)
ReplyDeleteI retract my statement--I misread your post. Sure the Quebec flag would be fine:)
ReplyDeletei showed this to my french friend, he says that this is completely fake news and that, in his words, Quebec is "just degeneracy" and "pure autism" :/
ReplyDeleteYou need new French friends. Preferably people who are not complete d*ckheads...
DeleteSounds like the French version of a Trumpster. My condolences on the degeneration in your lands.

ReplyDeleteTrue, but I live in Quebec and they use a LOT of english word slang.
